THE THREE WISE THINGS I KNOW I’M WISE FOR KNOWING

I’m wise because I know
     it hurts so much
     when pets die
to prepare us for the loss of
     real people, who matter.

I’m wise for knowing
     the really painful
     thing about suffering
is the fear that it will
     never end.

I’m wise because I know
     from careful observation
     that I’m a fool,
and it’s wise to know
     true things.
